Woods led York to promotion through the play-offs last season

York City Knights crashed to a 66-10 defeat at Leigh to damage their hopes of staying in the Championship.

Anthony Thackeray scored an early try, and Nathan Freer added a late consolation for the Knights.

Coach Dave Woods told BBC Radio York: "We were nowhere near good enough again, I'm at a loss.

"We just had no push, couldn't get out (of our own half), everyone's got to push off the ball. The disappointing thing is we don't train like that."

The result leaves the Knights next-to-bottom of the table, but bottom in relegation terms as the team below them, Toulouse, cannot go down.

The Knights have two games left to overhaul both Hunslet and Dewsbury, who are just above them but with superior points differences.

"The blokes are trying, they're trying right to the end," Woods said. "There are some individual efforts that are pretty good.

"It's just so disappointing to have scorelines like that put on you every week."

Woods has a tough half-week ahead, as the penultimate match against Halifax comes up on Thursday night.

"It hurts the players, we just can't find the answer. Once you cross that line you've got to do it, and we're not doing it at the moment," he added.

"I don't know whether we're kidding ourselves, but the players are confident they can stay up. I just don't know whether we have the talent or the desire."
