York City Knights have allowed centre Lee Waterman to leave the club and return to the amateur game.

The 24-year-old, who joined Knights in July 2009, was the side's leading points scorer last year.

Coach Dave Woods told BBC Radio York: "Lee rang (general manager) Ian Wilson the other day and asked for clearance to move to go back and play amateur.

"He hasn't been at training these last two weeks so we thought it was the right thing to do to let him go back."

Waterman was also the leading points scorer in Championship 1 last season and chosen for the divisional team of the year after joining the club from Skirlaugh.

He is understood to have joined East Hull in the National Conference League.
