Former Hull FC and Hull KR winger Clive Sullivan is one of 10 players short-listed for a Wembley statue.
The monument would stand beside that of Bobby Moore at Wembley Stadium to mark 80 years of rugby league being played there.
Sullivan, a World Cup-winning GB captain and Challenge Cup winner with both Hull clubs, died in 1985 aged 42.
His widow Ros told BBC Look North: "He was one of the people and he mixed well with supporters."
Former Hull FC player Terry Devonshire was Sullivan's best friend and he said: "You couldn't meet a better bloke, everybody loved Clive."
The full list of 10 will be revealed during the international between England and Australia at Wembley on Saturday.
