Hull FC half-back Sam Obst has left the club halfway through a two-year deal.
The 30-year-old Australian's departure will allow them to sign a replacement, but not in the same position.
"Peter [Gentle, head coach] and I have discussed the type of player we'd like and could do a deal soon," Black & Whites director of rugby Shaun McRae told BBC Radio Humberside.
"It won't be a position that Sam Obst plays because we feel we have enough cover in that role."
He added: "Clearly it would be an area where we feel we could be a little bit light and we're hopeful something will happen there very soon."
Obst, who signed for the Black & Whites in February from Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, has been told he is surplus to requirements for 2012.
