Lee Smith racked up 26 points as five-times Challenge Cup winners Wakefield overcame spirited Championship One newcomers Hemel Stags.

Smith scored two tries and kicked nine goals, while Jon Molloy and Liam Kay also crossed twice among the 11 scores.

Aaron Small claimed a spectacular breakaway try for Hemel, with Mike Bishay landing the conversion.

Hemel were forced to switch the tie to Wakefield after they were unable to source a suitable venue for the game.

Trinity took the lead within 10 minutes when Kay, on his Challenge Cup debut, broke through the middle from halfway and sent Molloy over for his maiden try.

Matty Wildie crossed from dummy half shortly afterwards, then Justin Poore ran on to a Wildie pass to go in beside the posts.

Smith's loose pass was juggled into the grasp of Small, who raced 60 metres to score for the Hertfordshire club, but Frankie Mariano responded soon after with a powerful break to score.

Smith recorded the first of his treble after good work by Mariano, before Kay capitalised on an overlap to claim his first Wildcats try just before the hour.

Molloy, Smith and Kay all completed their braces, then Kyle Trout joined the scorers with a solo score and Shulver capped his debut with a try as Hemel's resistance waned.
