Challenge Cup: Charlton proud of Workington spirit

Garry Charlton

Head coach Garry Charlton has praised Workington's character after coming back from six points down to win the Cumbrian derby against Whitehaven.

The 16-12 victory at Haven's Recreation Ground booked Town's place in the Challenge Cup fifth round at the expense of their rivals.

"It was good to come back because we soaked up a lot of punishment," Charlton told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"To get back in the game and get in front was credit to the boys."

He added: "We got the win I think we deserved in the end."

Town have now won the last seven derby meetings between the two West Cumbrian clubs, including a 28-16 Championship victory earlier this season.

"It's another game where we didn't do what we were supposed to do in the second half," Haven coach Dave Woods said.

"We made their defence look good because we were running across the field with the ball, halves did that instead of straightening up, we had plenty of opportunities but didn't execute properly.

"We need to worry about the league now, concentrate on that and get back in this week."

For Haven the result ensured a place among the Super League elite in Monday's draw, and makes them one of just three clubs from the Championship left in the famous cup competition.

"I'm not bothered who we get," Charlton added.

"We got the result, we've played ok here but whatever comes out the bag we'll assess then.

"The chairman said to me whatever we do we've got to stay in the Championship, and that's the main focus this year."

Barrow meanwhile were eliminated by fellow Championship side Halifax in a heavy 52-6 defeat at the Shay, although head coach Darren Holt was not surprised by the quality his side faced.

"You come to Halifax and expect nothing less, the effort was there was all to see, a few lapses in concentration cost us," Holt told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"This team put 60 points on Leigh the other week so we knew what to expect, but first half going in at 30 down we gave them about 24 points with poor kick options.

"We come back here in two weeks in time in the league so if we work hard and concentrating will take 30 points off the scoreboard."
