Larne Patrick will return to Huddersfield Giants after his one-year loan spell with Wigan Warriors ends this season.
The Wales international was part of a season-long swap deal, with back-rower Jack Hughes going the other way.
Utility forward Patrick, 26, will now return to the Giants, where he has a year left on his contract.
"Larne has been good for us this year and it has been a difficult decision," said Wigan head coach Shaun Wane.
"With him still being under contract with Huddersfield for next season we would have had to have paid a fee to bring him in on a permanent basis and probably moved one or two people around to fit him in under the salary cap."
Back-row forward Hughes has since agreed a move to Warrington for next season.
