Workington Town have signed ex-Wakefield hooker Stuart Howarth for the 2017 League One season.

Howarth, who turns 27 later this month, spent last season on loan to Championship side Bradford, and has also played at Super League level for Wigan, Salford, Hull FC and St Helens.

He will combine playing with a Masters degree at Liverpool John Moores.

"Playing part time professional rugby will allow me to have the best of both worlds," Howarth said.

"I've heard very good things about Dave Clark and know that he's assembling a very good mix of experience and new recruits. I can't wait to get going.''

Head coach Clark said: "He is very versatile in the positions he can play and that's an added bonus.

"His full time professional background can only be of benefit to the young lads we're bringing through the Town system."
