Tonga pulled off a shock 28-22 win over New Zealand to earn a World Cup quarter-final against Lebanon.

The Pacific Islanders came from 16-2 down at half-time to clinch victory with a hat-trick of tries from winger David Fusitua in front of a capacity crowd of 25,000 at Waikato Stadium.

It means Tonga top the group, with runners-up New Zealand facing a last-eight showdown with Fiji.

Tonga are potential semi-final opponents for England.

And it means that New Zealand are now in the same half of the knockout draw as Australia - two teams that have contested the last three finals.

If Tonga defeat Lebanon, then they would face the winners of the match between England and France in the semi-finals.

When asked if Tonga could win the tournament, coach Kristian Woolf said: "I'm not going to sit here and say 'no'. We've just beaten a tier-one nation.

"Australia's a whole different beast. They've won so many internationals because of the way they play and the way they just suffocate you.

"We've got a long, long way before we play them. We've got to worry about Lebanon next week, then we've got to worry about what happens after that as well."
