Cornish Pirates hooker Dave Ward believes the club can go a step further next season and win the Championship play-offs.

The Pirates lost 46-32 over two legs against Worcester this season.

Ward told BBC Cornwall: "This will spur us on now to go one better and be the ones winning next year.

"We'll be striving for the same goal which is to get to the final, and it's just that last hurdle and we'll hopefully get over it."

Even if they had beaten Worcester, the Pirates would have been unable to win promotion to the Premiership, owing to the lack of facilities at their Mennaye Field home.

However, plans have been approved to build a stadium outside Truro, shared between the Pirates and football side Truro City.

Ward said: "If you can imagine a stadium in Cornwall, we could get 15,000 if we get to a final so there's certainly big incentives there."

Ward made 20 appearances for the Pirates last term, scoring seven tries.

"I've played a lot of rugby this season and I'm pretty happy," he said. "I'm proud to be at a club that has got great support.

"I'll have a little bit of downtime then come back in July when we'll be bigger, better and stronger."
