Gruff Rees will join Italian side Aironi on a one-year coaching secondment from the Welsh Rugby Union.

The Wales Under-18 coach and WRU performance skills coach will join Aironi boss and ex-Neath coach Rowland Phillips at the Viadana-based side.

"I first worked with Rowland during my first stint with Wales Under-18, when Rowland was head coach," Rees said.

"We have the same approach to developing players and a similar attacking mindset."

The move is seen as an initiative which will ultimately benefit Rees himself in his coaching development, the WRU and Aironi.

"This is a unique coaching challenge where I could help to improve performances on the field, develop individuals within the Aironi set-up and also better myself as a coach from the experience," Rees added.

"I want to thank both my employers, the Welsh Rugby Union and also the Ospreys, who have both been hugely supportive of my development over the years."
