Wales' World Cup opponents Fiji and Samoa had differing fortunes as they began their tournament build-ups at the Pacific Nations Cup on Saturday.
Fiji lost 45-21 to Tonga at Lautoka, but Samoa enjoyed a 34-15 win over Japan in Tokyo in the openings games.
Apart from Japan hosting Samoa in the opening round, the rest of tournament takes place in Fiji throughout July.
The competition was scheduled to take place in Japan, but the earthquake that struck in May led to its rearrangement.
Wales will face Samoa in their second group match at the World Cup on 18 September, and will meet Fiji in the final group game on 2 October.
