Lock Dave Gannon has returned to Connacht as cover for injured second row Dave Nolan, who will miss most of the season because of a broken leg.

The 28-year-old joined the Irish side in 2005 before moving to New Zealand club Southland in 2009.

Gannon spent a season at Exeter Chiefs and he was training with Leinster before his move to Connacht.

"I'm excited to be back in Connacht and I'm looking forward to a big season ahead," said Gannon.

"It's been good seeing some old faces about, a lot has changed since I left and I've been impressed with the work ethic of the lads."

Gannon has been capped for Ireland Schools and U19s and was the captain of the Irish U21 side that reached the 2004 Rugby World Championship final in Scotland.

He was capped by Ireland A in 2007 against the New Zealand Maori and England Saxons.
