Newport Gwent Dragons began their Amlin Challenge Cup campaign with a bonus-point win at Italian side Cavalieri Prato on Saturday.

Wales wing Aled Brew opened the scoring for the visitors who led 14-3 at half-time, with Cavalieri limited to one penalty from wing Rima Wakarua.

Robert Sidoli, Wayne Evans, Tonderai Chavhanga and Gavin Thomas also crossed for the Welsh at Stadio Lungobisenzio.

Dragons will next face a sterner test at home to Perpignan on Thursday night.

Only a 24th-minute injury to Wales flanker Dan Lydiate spoiled a decent day's work in Italy for the Welsh region.

Dragons happy with five-point haul

"It's the same ankle he injured in the World Cup, hopefully not too much of a problem and we can get him back on the field quickly," Dragons coach Darren Edwards told BBC Sport Wales .

Asked about Lydiate's prospects of being fit for the Wales-Australia game on 3 December, Edwards was reluctant to assess the chances.

"I'm not sure, as you saw in the World Cup he'll do everything possible to get fit as quickly as possible. We'll scan him when we get back," Edwards added.

Early tries from Brew and Sidoli settled any Dragons worries about unknown opponents, while second-half touchdowns from Chavhanga, Evans and Thomas completed the job, Jason Tovey landing four conversions as the Welsh side achieved the bonus point with 20 minutes to go.

"It's always tough going into the unknown so it was important we focussed on ourselves and I thought it was a really good professional performance" said Edwards.

"We've got a really good team on paper but we've got to integrate them, and on Thursday when we go again against Perpignan I'd like to see a bit more cohesion."
