Sale Sharks hooker Joe Ward faces a spell on the sidelines after suffering a bad heel injury in training.
The former Wasps man, 31, had only recently returned to full fitness after a calf problem.
With Ward facing time out after splitting his heel on a stray stud, Sharks director of sport Steve Diamond may look to bolster his squad.
Meanwhile flanker Onasa'i Auva'a has joined up with the team after family issues held up his arrival.
Originally signed on a short-term contract in September, Auva'a decided to remain in New Zealand until his newborn son was old enough to make the 32-hour flight to England.
The 26-year-old is keen to make up for lost time and potentially earn himself a longer deal with the Premiership side.
"I am just so excited to be here - to have signed up with Sale is such a great feeling," he told the Manchester Evening News.
"It's a big family decision and I have moved over with my family and our new son. I'm on a trial period which is really good and I know Sale wouldn't want to invest in someone who doesn't perform.
"It pushes me to the edge and to take every opportunity that comes my way and I'm hoping to extend my contract in three months time and stay for longer."
