Third-choice Glasgow tighthead Ed Kalman makes Scotland squad

Glasgow prop Ed Kalman
Kalman has played for Scotland A but has yet to win a full cap

Uncapped Ed Kalman has been called into Scotland's Six Nations squad despite being third-choice tighthead prop at Glasgow Warriors.

The 29-year-old takes the place of clubmate Moray Low, who has been ruled out for two months with a knee injury.

A Scottish Rugby Union statement explained: "Kalman had a fine game for the Warriors against Leinster in the Heineken Cup yesterday.

"He will join up with the squad for a training camp in St Andrews next week."

With Mike Cusack also currently absent with an ankle injury, Kalman played from the start at Firhill as Warriors were edged out 23-16 in a tight contest with Heineken Cup holders Leinster.

Now he has been pulled into the Andy Robinson's squad for the opening two Six Nations matches and has the chance to stake his claim for a place in the Scotland side for the 4 February Calcutta Cup clash with England at Murrayfield.

Kalman's highest international honour so far has been 12 appearances for Scotland A.

After schooling in Glasgow, his adult rugby career began at Durham and Cambridge universities before joining Newcastle Falcons, who loaned him to Leeds Tykes.

He joined Border Reivers in 2006 and moved on to Warriors a year later.
