Glasgow Warriors have admitted failure in a bid to sign former New Zealand international Chris Masoe.
The back-row held talks with Warriors over a summer move, but has elected to stay with French Top 14 club Castres.
The 32-year-old won 20 caps between 2005-2007, including a 40-0 win over Scotland at Murrayfield.
"While we're disappointed Chris decided to stay in France, the efforts we made to bring him underline our ambition," said Glasgow head coach Sean Lineen.
"We're very happy with the signings and re-signings that we've made of late, and we'll continue to seek to add to them over the coming months."
Masoe had travelled to Glasgow to visit Warriors' home at Scotstoun and insisted the decision not to sign on had been a tough one.
He told www.glasgowwarriors.org: "Although I'm not going to be joining the Warriors on this occasion, I'd like to make a point of putting on record how impressed I've been with the club and Scottish Rugby throughout this whole process.
"The Warriors couldn't have done more to make us feel wanted, and as a result this was an extremely tough decision. The club are heading in the right direction and I wish them all the best for the future."
