Ireland stunned hosts South Africa with a 23-19 victory in their opening pool game at the Junior World Championship in Stellenbosch on Monday night.
Two JJ Hanrahan penalties put the Irish in front before Jordan Coghlan stormed over to make it 13-3 at half-time.
The Springboks hit back with a Paul Willemse try but Ulster's Iain Henderson went over for a converted try to leave Ireland 23-16 ahead.
A Tony Jantjies penalty set up a tense finish but the Irish defence held firm.
