Saracens dozen to take football coaching badges

Charlie Hodgson celebrates his try for England

Former England fly-half Charlie Hodgson and 11 other Saracens players are to take a football coaching qualification.

The group, also including centre Adam Powell and hooker Jamie George, will attend four sessions run by the Hertfordshire Football Association.

It is part of Saracens' Personal Development Programme to prepare their players for life after rugby.

"Coaching football, or any other qualification, is a wonderful way for us to be challenged," said George.

The course, which involves classroom and practical sessions, will take place at Old Albanians RFC in St Albans, starting on 20 September, and lead to a Level 1 coaching award.

"I believe this is the first time this kind of partnership has happened anywhere in the country," said Alan Ackrell, Hertfordshire FA's football development officer.

"The course will help the players broaden their coaching experience and teach them how to work with young footballers of all abilities.

"I'm also sure I will learn from them as they are elite sportsman with their own ideas and experiences of coaching at the very highest level."
