Never known such a Scot's team unknown at the start of the season so all you guys making the selections could be right! I still think there are 2 main areas of concern : guys must tackle !!,simple really and no outstanding No 10 + midfield ,Scotland's perennial problem. Anyway go for it although my tip is England for 6N glory (and that hurts) , however if they're the best so be it
If Ford and Dickenson are near the squad then a very long and disappointing 6N awaits. We really need players with ability and form. Ford has the former, but the latter has gone and he needs to be sidelined. Dickenson is the worst prop I have seen in a Scotland shirt. His loose play is great, but if takes the field at Twickenham I foresee a mauling akin to that of the Irish scrum last year.
Jackson is playing well for Glasgow at 10, almost like a 3rd centre, but then you need a backup kicker, either Horne (as happens at Glasgow) or Laidlaw at 9. Pyrgos would be my choice for 9, but I'm not sure who I'd pair him with as we need a good, dependable place kicker. How is Heathcote kicking at the moment?
@52 are you talking about the English cricket team?
Does anyone know if K Brown has actually been announced as skipper? i was under the impression that he just went down to launch as senior squad member and Johnson was to announce next wk. I rate Brown but hope they make Kellock captain.
@62 Aside from Barclay being missing you mean? ;-)Know what you mean about the 10 jersey though in the last 10 years we've had Hodge, Ross, Laney, Parks, Godman & Patterson all had their faults some more than others but at least just now we have options with Weir, Jackson, Heathcote & Laidlaw all capable of playing there can't remember the last time I knew of 4 different players vying for 10
Too early to rate Pyrgos bit 10 shirt has never been well filled since Chalmers. After the debacle in Cardiff, Godman got sidelined, injured and then shunted down south. Weir or Jackson seem the best options but consistency remains the issue. Visser electric but defence?Be good to see Johnnie Beattie back...the return of the killer Bs?
@60 You could say the same of the Sale players selected given the sharks have only won 2 games this season so far. Good players can still be part of a bad team. Of the Edinburgh players in the squad I don't think you can argue too much against them given the available options in their positions. Maybe Gilchrist but again who else is eligible (and not internationally retired) to choose from?
If he picks players on form for their clubs there would not be a single Edinburgh player in the team, with the possible exception of Visser since we are still hoping that he is the real deal. Johnson is nothing more than a stop gap, I hope the new funding from the shirt deal will help secure a proper international coach with proven credentials. 2 wins for us will be a step forward.
pyrgos, jackson 9, 10 to inject some life into the team scotland are very frustrating to watch creating opportunities then dropping the ball visser should help but basics need to improve
Re 52, it's interesting when the trolls come crawling out. Happy people? Not really, you'd probably think. Good luck Scotland. I see many parallels with Wales... Thought you played well in the AI's - not so very far off at all. New coach often seems to inspire a honeymoon period in the players. Just don't beat Wales...
As a fellow Celt I wish you every success against England. However, SJ is NOT a great coach. His career demonstrates he is a good talker and media manipulator as well as an effective no 2 in a coaching team. He has yet to demonstrate any success as a Head Coach. Perhaps he will prove me wrong but I do not believe he is the coaching solution that the SRU need. Good luck at Twickenham!
Also think Vernon should def start. I am an exile down here and have seen him play a bit albeit in a poor Sale team. He is very mobile and has scored a hat load of tries for them. Also get Horne, Dunbar in centre, Seymour on wing Lamont and Evans are not on form. He MUST pick on form!!! Hamilton shd b capt!! Unleash the monster!!!
Last year Scotland didn't look bad, they just had a problem with Scoring tries! They were their own worst enemy. Can Johnson change that? I'm not sure, as Robinson wasn't a bad coach. But maybe a fresh start is needed. Mid table if they are lucky!
Glad SJ has picked players on form. AR was v poor at that. Can't believe I'm saying this but my expectations have been so bludgened to nothing over the years watching Scotland; I don't really care if we lose every game in the 6N just so long as we score tries and at least show some tactical nous on the field!
at last some common sense ... concentrating on playing rugby the scottish Way - and a coach that understands the need to do so ... I must be dreaming !!
Scotland won't win a game in the six nations as they are just awful
Yes Scott, they will come, but probably long after your reign is over.....I hope I'm wrong, but I'm anticipating the same sort of downfall as when you were at the helm of the Ospreys. Let's be honest, you're not head coach material at a region/club, let alone a national side...
