John you don't have to praise them that much you are not on Sky sports lol
And for the record, Stuart Lancaster, I think, is one of the best coaches around. I also do not believe the English are arrogant. All the English blokes I played with and against were great. I grew up around English people in Malaysia. And I didn't take Wade Dooley out in an international, despite it being a good story. Coming down tomorrow!
And if you haven't seen my preview programme for the game, my last bit of rugby broadcasting for a while, here it is on iplayer http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01qh8pc/Sport_Nation_29_01_2013/
@163 You are far too sensitive to be a rugby fan maybe you should consider supporting badminton.
What does annoy me is that perhaps maybe apart from France when any of the six nation contenders beat England they act as if they have won the World Cup.. crazy. Anyway my opinion is Scotland are always dangerous when underdogs so its going to be a tough game. England could be caught napping. However I think there is lots of exciting talent in both teams but England should still come through.
Looking forward to the game, but will it be a Scotland win?!?!?! anyones guess. Watched SportNation yesterday (Tuesday) and the first thought was JB why aren't you coaching or are you!?!?!?!Omens for Saturday Beattie at No8 and Laidlaw at srum-half. And lets hope Jackson fulfills his potential and becomes the new John Rutherford.
Wish you would reconsider the commentating John.Lancaster does not think there is much between the sides. The first up pack and replacements look strong. Grant made a noticeable difference to Glasgow when he came on against Northampton the other week. If the front 5 man up and play well this could be a good game as long as the backs don't make two passes then boot the ball away. Good luck boys.
Was it the 1983 game or 1986 when you took out Wade Dooley on the 1st kick off John? No yellow cards in those days, eh? Hopefully the coaches will have watched how montpelier bring jnr into the game with him running up the middle from poor kicks so we can see him running over the English backs. The only time we beat them is when they get surprised by just how abrasive we can be.
76. "The South Sea Islanders have always complained that NZ and AUS take their best"Largely a myth. If anythign the flow is the otherway. As for this match well I suppose Scotland can only imporve on recent performances.
Shame you won't be commentating on the game, JB, but rules are rules I guess. Great to see your son playing really well again.Oh well. Hope springs eternal and anything can happen on the day. Once more in to the breach........ come on Scotland!!!
Dear JohnThank you for your article. I can still remember the pain of 1983 - my memories are of Laidlaw and Rutherford showing tremendous skill and smartness, the rest of the team running around like dervishes on speed, and England reduced to bewilderment and confusion. In those days, the Calcutta Cup was always the biggest match of the year - sadly, that's not often the case any more.
As an Englishman I always enjoying reading what John has to say, definitely a refreshing change from the usual drivel that comes out ahead of this fixture. More of this please BBC and less of the ‘he said, she said’ rubbish!
Aw, what a top guy John sounds like. It'll happen eventually matey but the Twickenham effect does seem to make the Scots crumble rather. Corbs is a big loss in the front row and Scotland will have to believe they can take us on and drive us back. They've got the talent... A strong Scotland is always useful in a Lions year but I'm hoping they start to pick up momentum post Saturday!
Ah...the trolls seem to have nipped on to the Maitland stream. England have home advantage and are coming off the back of a win.....Scotland are on the back of an embarassing loss BUT might have the "first game for new coach" factor. Hoping for a hard fought match, most likely an England win...but there's a chance of an upset.
It's a shame Manu's out but I still think England should win fairly easily on Saturday. That being said though, never underestimate the Scot's as when you do, they usually do something totally alien to their usual form and play unbelievably well !!Hopefully it will be a good game with some great Rugby and a nice England victory at the end....
@150 I know that Lamonts offloading and passing skills are right up there with your typical winger, but I think this isn't such a worry with Visser and Maitland on the wings. Both like to come in and feed off the shoulder. So what we have to hope is that Lamont rides/stands up the first tackle with either of them coming in field to take the short ball to get in behind the defense.
I'm really looking forward to the next Six Nations edition, although I might have to watch it in French, since I'm abroad. Never the less, I do have my hopes up for Scotland for winning more matches than last year...
