Methody beat Inst in Schools' Cup final

Methodist College retained the Ulster Schools' Cup by coming from a try down to beat rivals Royal Belfast Academical Institution 20-5 in Monday's final.

Methody fly-half Josh Bingham scored a try in each half and kicked five points in an outstanding performance.

Winger Conor Kelly's try early in the second half put Methody into the lead.

Inst had gone ahead in the 15th minute with a try by skipper Josh Atkinson but he hobbled off with an ankle injury before half-time.

Methody are the most successful school in the competition and this was their 34th outright win.

With six of last year's starting line-up still in their side, Methody went into the showpiece occasion as favourites.

But they went behind in the 15th minute when Irish Schools international Atkinson got over for the game's opening try after a spell of Inst pressure, with Nathan Brown sending the conversion wide of the posts.

When flanker Atkinson had to go off injured it was a big blow to Inst and they lost the lead in the 31st minute when Bingham got the first of his tries.

It came after a spell of intense Methody pressure during which they patiently went through the phases and Bingham just made the line.

The fly-half missed the conversion and was also off target with an attempted drop with the last kick of the half, leaving it 5-5.

The second half was a tale of Methody dominance and determined Inst defending.

Kelly raced over from Rudi Benade's well-timed pass and ran under the posts to give Bingham a simpler conversion.

Bingham then added a penalty for 15-5 before finishing brilliantly with the final touchdown after a kick through.
