@140 - i wouldnt worry too much, none of them will be in the starting 15 and you will have at least 12 Welsh starters which will doubtless make you very happy.
I'm sure we would all have made different choices in the Lions squad, but WG will have spent a long time thinking about how he wants to play against Aussie, and who he thinks are best suited to play that way. He has picked players that are known to his team, and that may well have told against some Scots, but at least we can look forward to building for next 6N with a strong squad on the SA tour.
@140: I really hope Parling doesn't play any where in the front row!
The players who shouldn't be going are Youngs, Hartley, Stevens, Parling and Vuniplola, all front row players all English, pushed for by that clown coach Rowntree. Its not Welsh bias, its English bias.
@138 Midas-childI defer to your better judgement on European form, but I think that there's still the fact that Scotland's best players lie in the positions of strength in Wales and England e.g. Brown in the back row, remember Robshaw got two MOM in the 6N and didn't get the nod either? I went to Sydney 1989 and saw The Lions win 19-18 in the final test, quite a few Scots in that Lion's team!!
@136 I take your point but when you consider the selections made you can't say its on form for all. Welsh clubs have underperformed in the Pro12 and HC this season, and despite the great win against England they put in middling performances in the rest and had a horrendous run prior to that. SW last captained a win for wales when? I could go in more depth but my word limit is reached!
@ 132, not lack of interest just used to bias selections choices managed from south of the border by the constant pressures put on all Lions managers by the English RU.Scotland ran more tries in agains England in one game than England scored in their last 4 games of the 6N. I think Engalnd got off lightly with 10 player being selected and Scotland got cheated with only having 3 selected.
Looking at the 6N table then Scotland could have expected more players, especially as they beat the Aussies last time out. However the problem is that it's not just form in the 6N but form over a season of club and European rugby, this added, perhaps, to past Lion's experience. Then there's the fact that Scotland's best players lie in the positions of strength in Wales and England. Tough but true.
Richie Gray really looks like he is with his two kids there, doesn't he?Well done to those three, thoroughly deserved although most people in England were surprised by Maitland's inclusion. 4 of the front 5 are Ospreys who got dominated by Glasgow a few weeks back so that one seems strange to me. Gutted for Kelly Brown, without some Welsh bias he would be on the plane.
133 perhaps, but i think the lions tour is lacking the more skilful backs and that is where maitland and hogg will come in.132 partly content but shocked ryan grant left out and matt stevens in! name over form in some cases unfortunately but expected.v gd news re P12 skysports coverage. real boost for comp.
Perhaps a case could have been made for Visser over Maitland? Very skilful and quick also. Plus having a 4th giant winger on tour would certainly unnerve the Aussies!
All quiet on the Scottish thread then, no new posters for 4 hrs, contentment all round I guess!
Of course the Scots should have had more players in the squad and at the expense of the Irish. We can only hope that Gatland doesn’t live to regret not selecting Laidlaw at 9. Laidlaw was easily the best of the 9s in the 6 nations.
