Wales Sevens beat Fiji 22-19 on their way to the IRB Gold Coast Sevens Cup quarter-finals.
Paul John's side meet South Africa in the last eight in the Australian resort on day two (Sunday, 13 October).
Wales beat Portugal 33-14 in their second game and then lost 19-14 to Canada.
But in the Pool C decider wing Chris Knight twice went over with James Davies and skipper Adam Thomas also touching down.
England Sevens face Fiji in the quarter-finals after losing 22-14 to South Africa in their opener.
Wins over France (26-12) and Spain (54-7) followed for England.
Scotland Sevens meet the United States in Sunday's bowl quarter-finals following a 21-19 defeat by Argentina, 19-12 loss to Samoa and 21-21 draw with host Australia.
