Jean-Marc Doussain's late penalty condemned Scotland to a 19-17 defeat at Murrayfield and kept France in contention for the Six Nations title.
After falling behind to two Maxime Machenaud penalties, Scotland led 14-9 at half time courtesy of tries by Stuart Hogg and Tommy Seymour.
An intercepted pass sent Yoann Huget clear after the break and Machenaud's conversion put France 16-14 ahead.
Duncan Weir kicked Scotland back into the lead before Doussain's late effort.
