London Welsh are back in the Premiership after being relegated from the top flight only a year ago.

London Welsh have appointed former Bristol and Cardiff Blues coach Matthew Ferguson as assistant coach for the 2014-15 season.

Ferguson joins fellow assistants Gordon Ross and Ollie Smith on the Exiles coaching staff.

Head coach Justin Burnell said: "We're very fortunate to be able to add Matthew to our existing coaching staff.

"Matt's knowledge of the scrum is second to none and he has good links within the RFU system."

Ferguson recently worked with the Rugby Football Union's Scrum Factory programme alongside former Leicester and England prop Graham Rowntree and Burnell is hopeful his new assistant can help the club build on last season's promotion and establish themselves in the top flight.

"After the excellent work done on the scrum last season by Darren Crompton, the role of a technical person to work primarily with the scrum is of the utmost importance," he added.

"Last year's success was built on an ethic of hard work which was constantly evident within the players' group.

"We are confident that the addition of Matthew in to that ethos will help us to be competitive in the Premiership."
