Sale Sharks v Salford Red Devils cross-code game put back

Plans for a cross-code fixture between rugby union side Sale Sharks and rugby league's Salford Red Devils, which was due to be played at the AJ Bell Stadium in August, have been put on hold.

Both clubs moved into the stadium in Barton back in 2012.

And initial plans for the game were announced in February.

But logistical difficulties regarding their respective league seasons have led to the match being temporarily put back to a later date.

The fixture, which would have been the first of its kind in England for more than a decade, would have seen the sides play 40 minutes of each code.

"Our coaching staff was behind the concept from day one but actually fitting the game in has always been the tricky part," said Salford chief executive Martin Vickers.

"The original date sits very close to some key fixtures for us at the back end of our season, and for Sale it is right at the beginning of their new campaign," Vickers told the Red Devils website.

"We are disappointed not to be able to take part but feel due to the lack of a suitable date we must act in our best interests and put plans to play the Sharks on hold.

"We will continue to work with the Sharks and the stadium sponsors to look for another potential date in the future."
