Northampton's Lee Dickson says recent failures in Europe's top competition have raised the importance of their European Rugby Champions Cup campaign.

Saints had failed to make it through the pool stage of the Heineken Cup since losing the 2011 final.

"As a squad we want to win this cup," said scrum-half Dickson.

"It's one of the things we've not won and we've let ourselves down the last couple of years. We want to go further this year."

Northampton went on to win the Challenge Cup last season after failing to qualify for the knockout rounds of the Heineken Cup, and they have made a mixed start to this year's revamped European Rugby Champions Cup.

After losing to Racing Metro in Paris, they responded with a home bonus-point win over Ospreys, and travel to Italy this weekend for the first game of a double header against Treviso.

"These two games now are must-win games. We let ourselves down in Racing, so we'll be full on in the next two weeks," the England international told BBC Radio Northampton.

"Another slip up and we're out.

"It will be a packed Italian crowd over there and it is a proud nation.

"It's a big cup competition and you lose one more game and you're out."
