England backs coach Andy Farrell says it is not beyond Sam Burgess to force his way into Stuart Lancaster's World Cup squad later this year.

Rugby league convert Burgess was this week named in the Saxons squad but has been mooted for a call to the seniors.

"You wouldn't put it past him, with his hunger and desire, to do that," Farrell said.

Burgess has made seven appearances for Premiership club Bath since his switch from rugby league in October.

He made his Bath debut in November in a 25-6 win over Harlequins.

"I think we're pretty fortunate at this moment, through injuries over the last couple of years, that we have been forced to use a few different combinations - we've found out a lot about a lot of people," Farrell added.

"We've got five or six really top-class centres - and Sam's going to be one of those."
