James Wilson wants to make his mark at full-back for Northampton Saints during Ben Foden's injury lay-off.
England international Foden, 29, has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.
"It's disappointing for Fodes and the team," 31-year-old Wilson told BBC Radio Northampton.
"But I have the responsibility now to take over the role. It's a tough job but I'm willing to take it on and try owning it for the rest of the season."
New Zealander Wilson has played 66 times for Saints, but has featured all across the back line.
He covered at full-back during the 2012-13 season, while Foden was injured, and believes it is his best position.
"I prefer time on the ball and I like to create things from nothing," he said. "It lets me play my natural game and lets me use my skills and assets."
