Ospreys backs coach Gruff Rees says they will know by the end of this week whether former Wales number eight Gareth Delve is to join them.
Reports have linked the 11-times capped 32-year-old with the Swansea-based region.
"He does tick a lot of boxes as far as what we're looking for to bring young, inexperienced players through the squad," said Rees.
"So maybe he can help us, but we'll know more by the end of the week."
The ex-Bath, Gloucester and Melbourne Rebels forward has left Japanese side NEC Green Rockets after a two-season stint.
Cardiff-born Delve, 32, has won 11 Wales caps and captained Rebels against the 2013 British and Irish Lions.
He made his Wales debut in the 2006 Six Nations championship against Scotland.
Delve's last Wales cap came in 2010 after he was recalled amid a back-row injury crisis
"He's a good, experienced player and a good leader," said Rees.
