Northampton Saints have signed former Bristol centre Luke Eves on a short-term deal as cover for the World Cup.

The 26-year-old ended his second spell with Bristol in May after they lost the Championship final against Worcester.

Earlier in his career, Eves played for England in the 2009 World Under-20 Championship final.

"With a number of players away for the World Cup we felt we needed some more depth in the squad," said Saints director of rugby Jim Mallinder.

"Luke is a good player who has plenty of experience in the Premiership and in the Championship, and we believe he has the quality to be able to contribute as our season gets under way."

Premiership fixtures for the new season will be revealed on Friday, but it will start during the World Cup, which runs from 18 September to 31 October, to ensure it can be completed by May 2016 without teams having to play midweek fixtures.
