Jack Carty hit 20 points as Connacht stayed top of Pool 1 of the European Challenge Cup by beating Newcastle.
Both teams were under-strength with 18 Connacht players unavailable because of injury and Newcastle opting to start several young players in Galway.
Carty's three penalties helped Connacht lead 9-3 at the break.
A Richard Mayhew try cut Connacht's advantage to 12-10 but two more Carty penalties and a Danie Poolman try sealed the home side's victory.
