Cornish Pirates strong defence has come in for praise after they beat Cardiff Blues' Premiership Select side 22-10 in the British and Irish Cup.

Jack Arnott scored two of Pirates' three tries in Cardiff as the club won their fifth successive game.

"It was a hell of an effort defensively," said coach Gavin Cattle

"We didn't have much ball in the second half, but sometimes your spirit shines through in defence and it was certainly there for us.

"You don't want to be making that many tackles, but at times you have to. We looked, even until the 80th minute, pretty strong and from a team point of view it's very good."

The win leaves the Pirates top of their pool, a point clear of Nottingham as they extended their victorious record to a fifth game in all competitions.

"Five in-a-row, I can't remember the last time we've done that," Cattle added to BBC Radio Cornwall.

"Winning breeds confidence and these young boys, you can see them building each week."
