A husband and wife who play sevens rugby for Russia have been provisionally suspended after testing positive for the banned drug meldonium.

Governing body World Rugby sanctioned Alexey and Alena Mikhaltsov after both failed out-of-competition tests.

On Monday, Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova revealed she had tested positive for the same drug.

Meldonium was placed on World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) list of banned substances on 1 January.

Wada revealed on Friday it had recorded 99 positive tests for meldonium from different sports this year, reported by a variety of national anti-doping organisations.
