Munster stuttered to an unconvincing win against Newport Gwent Dragons at Rodney Parade.
The Irish province dominated up front but struggled to convert their dominance into points.
A bizarre second-half touchdown by replacement Cian Bohane eventually edged Munster clear after Hallam Amos' interception try for Dragons had cancelled out Jean Kleyn's early score.
Johan Erasmus' team had to repel a last-minute driving maul for their win.
The match turned in the 57th minute when Munster produced a rare moment of backline quality to carve open the Dragons' defence.
Wing Darren Sweetnam had the ball knocked out of his hand over the try line as he attempted to run around behind the posts, but it went backwards and was pounced on by Bohane.
Fly-half Tyler Bleyendaal converted to open up a four-point lead while Sweetnam no doubt heaved a sigh of relief.
The win cements Munster's position in sixth place while Dragons' losing bonus point lifts them a point clear of Edinburgh in seventh.
There was little in the early exchanges to hint at the tight finish to follow as Munster looked to make up for last week's loss against Cardiff Blues.
Dragons struggled to contain their forward drives, with number eight CJ Stander and man-of-the-match James Cronin asking serious questions of defenders and the scrummage creaking under pressure.
And when Kleyn burst through for the opening try things were looking ominous for the home team.
But Kingsley Jones' team defended cleverly - committing as few players as possible to the breakdowns - and when Amos picked off Colm O'Shea's pass and sprinted 70 yards for the try the Dragons were unexpectedly on level terms at the interval.
And even after Bohane's intervention Munster could not shake off the home team, and spent the final minutes defending desperately on their own line as Dragons threw most of their team into a driving maul.
