Cardiff Blues have given a first senior professional contract to scrum-half Tomos Williams.

The 21-year-old has made 19 appearances for the region and had generated interest from English clubs.

Williams, a product of the Treorchy, has played for Wales at under-20 level and started the Blues' opening Challenge Cup victory at Bristol.

Williams' signing follows the departure of Tavis Knoyle for the Newport Gwent Dragons earlier this week.

The Blues also have Wales squad member Lloyd Williams and Lewis Jones competing for the number nine shirt.

Head coach Danny Wilson said: "It's great that Tomos has committed his future to Cardiff Blues and we are delighted to have him here.

"He is a young, exciting player who has a big future in the game if he continues his development.

"With Tomos, Lloyd Williams and Lewis Jones we have a lot of strength in depth and that competition will drive them on individually."
