I do think the next coach should be independent of the home nations - that way when AWJ goes to SA & Warburton is captain for a third time we won't have any wailing.Actually one thing that has always characterised a Lions tour for me is a band of players coming together and playing against the very best so I hope SA are back to their best by '21.
@234 Why keep bringing EJ into this? Its Townsend, Schmidt and Cotter who were most in line. And it seems to be the Scots and Irish who hold the biggest grudge against him!Any part of a discussion is alternative scenarios. No-one as far as I can tell is saying EJ (or the others) WOULD have won the series and plenty of us are giving WG lots of credit for what he did. Don't let your ABE blind you!
How can so many say that different selections and tactics would have yielded a better result in NZ with such apparent certainty? The opposite could easily have happened! Give WG some credit! It would be a different reaction if EJ had coached the Lions and drew the series: there would be talk of tactical brilliance, motivation and shrewd selection, and inevitable knighthoods!
I didn't agree with the criticism of Gatland before, during or after the tour and watched with dismay as people laid into him for various foolish reasons - often because of their dislike of his apparent style or because he didn't pick some players for the tour that they wanted. The results on both tours speak for themselves and it's about time he was showed the respect he deserves.
Grateful to Gatland for the 2013 win against Australia. I think it is time for a change though. The criticism of the 2017 NZ tour is valid. That is why it hurts. There was enough fire power to beat NZ had team selection and tactics been better.
@ dragons breath. "My family is riddled with English".......Can't stop chuckling at that. Absolutely priceless and I'm an Englishman! Please don't stop!!
@228 Ah, so you are able to give a balanced view then as your family are "riddled with English"!
@208 dragonsbreath You're absolutely right: you can't question the valour of those keyboard warriors. Keep fighting the good fight, boys.
@210 "You're a credit to the Anyone But England Brigade!"Hardly. My family is riddled with English, including some rugby people from the Leicester branch. Me and the kids are die-hard Welsh supporters but thoroughly appreciated the Eng Lions contingent. Perhaps that's why I find your endless insidious anti-Welsh contributions a little tedious.
Ah it's so refreshing to see all the trolls from the summer are still here banging the same drum! Ultimately would you have taken a drawn series before it started? Yes. Was it more successful than the last tour of NZ? Yes. Did we ride our luck a touch? Yes. We'd all have made tweaks to the side but it's still sad how some turned it into a nationalist arguament.
Night Wizard, 1 bottle of wine down already, steady now....
I have to admire the stamina of some of the people on here and other HYS sites. Hour after hour they keep pounding away with the same biased illogical and (sometimes) nasty posts, usually running down Wales, Scotland, England etc etc. Having had a nice dinner and a bottle of wine I just dropped in on this site hoping to see something fresh or innovative. No chance!Good night all.
Gatland and co observed players over a full year, at the same time having to develop a plan to try and take on the double world champions in their own back yard. Also up against a schedule described as suicidal by most. Players were picked on performance, their respective strengths and weaknesses and their ability to work collectively. 11 Lionel Messi don't make an effective team.
@177&201 Rosbif - Selection was a combination of current form and knowing what a player can do. AWJ a case in point & in my opinion he wasn't outplayed by the other locks on tour. AWJ put in the hard work in all 3 tests - set up for the subs!A quick scan of player ratings from the English press generally has MI ahead slightly, AWJ & CL levelish a little ahead of IH. Reasonable assessment really
Amazed that this argument is still going on. There were enough inquests about what Gatland got right and wrong in the aftermath of the tour. All that he has done is make a few controversial comments in an effort to drum up interest in his book, and the whole thing kicks off again.
209. Posted by RugbyGirlyBoys on2 hours agoIf only Finn Russell was at fly half, Hogg at 15, Seymour at 11, and Hamish Watson at 7 the Lions would have won the series 3-0!And if Grandma had testicles she'd be Grandpa.
