Who cares, when Rugby became professional, it comes down to how much money a person can make over short period of time before their body can’t take it anymore or they get serious injury. If he really wanted to put country 1st he would have renewed the WRU contract, but like he said himself he went for the money. Let me shed a tear for his sorry situation!
338 Scotland RUOh dear...we started drinking a bit early today didn't we?
The announcement is ill-timed - granted but ultimately it's the right decision. The policy is more generous than NZ, SA & Ireland. Welsh rugby can't compete with the financial clout of England & France. How are we going to get anywhere being feeder clubs? Raising the standard of the Pro 14 will never be achieved if we regularly lose the likes of Webb & Liam Williams to foreign leagues.
These rules are just stupid for both Eng and Wal. Both operate a 'best person for the job...no matter where they are from' position to their coaches but not their players. You also get situations where Ben Teo has played for Worcester for less than 2 years and about 20 times can be picked yet someone like Nick Abendanon played for Bath for about 9 years and over 200 times can't
@338ooking pretty stupid now aren't you as mid mediocre mid table Bath have just beaten Scarlets.....Sorry Glasgow??? When was the last time your your poor (if improving) teams beat any England club or national team regularly- you need a serious reality check, mate.....The teams you mentioned would struggle in Premiership as you would have tough games every week and no resting
It is protectionism of the worst order, as a Welshman I want the players playing in the best teams alongside the best players across the world, that is how you get better and progress, nimbism of the highest order, time to clean out the hangers on and old farts of the WRU
Reminiscent of Carling and the old farts .Wake up WRU we, the followers of rugby are your paymasters. Why don't you try a referendum on who agrees with this procedure, absolute madness.
I feel this as well as Lee Byrnes story today we are quickly becoming the laughing stock of the rugby world.
@338 You do realise that Webb has gone to France don't you? What has those teams "hammering" English teams got to do with the French league? But why let facts get in the way of an anti English rant eh!
@Huw1 play in a decent league Glasgow, Scarlets, Leinster, Ulster, and Munster would hammer the majority of English teams
To make it clear to all players - whether they be Welsh, Scottish, English etc etc - the club they are thinking of moving to could say ' Right, you join us there is no way you will be released for any of your countries fixtures'. That will at least clear the air so that everyone, Clubs, players, countries, fans know where they all stand. It may make some like RW think again, or it may not.
I think Webb is being short sighted here, he might earn more cash playing for Toulon but it’s a very physical league and he won’t get as much down time as he would playing for welsh team on a Central contract. So in the long term playing in wales might actually prove financially better but also missing out on 2019 World Cup and possibly lions tour.
I don’t blame any Welsh player wanting to play in a decent league. I wouldn’t pay to watch regional rugby - I can’t see how the WRU are going to improve attendances especially when they don’t pay enough to keep players like Webb.
How is employment law going to help? His contract will be with Toulon, national teams can pick who they like
Can you remove the homophobic comment Aitch 326
Difficult balancing act for the WRU. The foreign club stricture in England has benefitted the Premiership hugely and kept almost all the best players (as opposed to past their best) in the domestic league.Given the relative size you can see why Wales would want to use the same policy but how that might be impossible in a free-market for talent.Best not to make rules in the first place!
What we are witnessing here is the fall of Welsh rugby 🏉
