Caroline Thomas scored a hat-trick as defending champions France ran in nine tries to defeat Wales in their Women's Six Nations opener.

France secured a bonus point before the interval thanks to Thomas' brace and tries from Safi N'Diaye and Lea Murie.

Wales only points came courtesy of Robyn Wilkins' first-half penalty.

Romane Menager's two tries, a third for Thomas, replacement Doriane Constanty's length of the field try and Murie's second of the evening sealed the win.

Rowland Phillips' side can be proud of their efforts against a dominant French side.

They face Italy - who beat Scotland in their opening game - in Lecce on Saturday, 9 February.
