Gary Caldwell says the surprise return of Darren Fletcher to the Scotland squad is a "massive boost" to their Euro 2012 qualifying hopes.
The midfielder had been ruled out with tonsillitis ahead of Saturday's match against Liechtenstein in Vaduz.
"It is a massive boost," said defender Caldwell. "Darren is our captain, our leader and obviously a massive player for Manchester United and us.
"We had counted him out, so to have him is going to be a big boost."
Caldwell is looking for the Scots to take the initiative from the first whistle in Vaduz, although he believes patience will be key against a side who only lost at Hampden in September last year to a stoppage-time header from Stephen McManus.
"We have had a good week," said the Wigan defender. "We have done a lot of training and the boys look ready.
"It is a big challenge. The game against Liechtenstein can be difficult.
"They showed in the game at Hampden that they are not a bad side and we are going to have to be ready for them.
"You have to start with a real tempo, a real desire to go and win the game and put them under pressure as much as you can.
"You might not score in that period, but you have to start on the front foot and put them under pressure from the start."
The Scots are two points behind the Czech Republic with two games remaining in the battle to finish runners-up in Group I and claim a play-off place.
Caldwell, who believes the Scots can take maximum points despite being away to Spain on Tuesday, realises that a win over Liechtenstein is the priority.
"I think they will be a hard-working team," he said.
"They are very difficult to break down because they set up in a 4-5-1 formation which is very organised.
"It is going to be a night when we are going to have to pass the ball very quickly. We will also have to be patient.
"Whether it is the first minute or the last minute, we are going to have to keep doing the right things to try to get that goal and win the match."
