Lithuania coach Raimondas Zutautas has quit after completing the Euro 2012 qualification campaign with a crushing 4-1 home defeat by the Czech Republic.
"Since I, as manager, failed to fulfil the task, I am ending my work with the team," Zutautas said.
The 39-year-old had replaced Portugese Jose Couceiro in February 2010, had long been under fire.
Lithuania managed only one victory in eight games - a 1-0 away win against the Czechs in September 2010.
They lost 2-0 away to minnows Liechtenstein last June and then drew September's return match 0-0.
Zutautas' side finished fourth in Group I behind Spain, the Czechs and Scotland.
This week's defeat allowed the Czechs to overtake Scotland and take their place in the play-offs for next summer's finals.
Having reached a high of 37 in the Fifa rankings in 2008, Lithuania have slipped to 75th - the biggest drop of any side.
