Shinty: North and South holders pick up wins

Quarter-finals day in both the North and South area championships produced victories for both title holders.

Newtonmore edged local rivals Kingussie 2-0 at the Eilan in the Cooperative MacTavish Cup in the North.

In the South, Inveraray ousted Aberdour 8-0 at the Winterton in the AJG Parcels Celtic Society Cup.

Youngster Callum Stewart scored both goals in the first-half as Newtonmore eliminated Kingussie in the first Badenoch Derby of the season.

It was a lot tighter at Spean Bridge where a cliffhanger saw home side Lochaber go out 2-1 to Lovat on penalties after a three-all draw.

Shaun Nicholson opened for Lochaber before Greg Matheson's penalty and then Kevin Bartlett put Lovat ahead.

Scott Paterson equalised before Matheson edged Lovat ahead once more and Lochaber's Ben Delaney levelled again in the second half.

Extra-time yielded no further goals in advance of the shootout.

Glenurquhart progressed at the expense of Kinlochshiel courtesy of a 3-2 scoreline at Drumnadrochit.

Fraser Heath's first-half double put Glen well in charge, but Oliver MacRae pulled one back in the second-half.

However, the single-goal margin was short-lived and Neale Reid soon restored a two-goal cushion.

Gordie MacDonald then narrowed Glenurquhart's advantage again to 3-2 to produce a nervy last 18 minutes.

Grant MacKenzie and a Michael Rodgers second-half double put Kilmallie through 3-0 at home to Beauly who had spoiled Kilmallie's 100% league record the previous Saturday.

The Celtic Society Cup in the South has been Inveraray's almost permanently of late and they brushed Aberdour aside 8-0 in their quarter-final, helped by doubles from Lewis MacNicol, Peter MacIntyre and Euan McMurdo.

Taynuilt lost last year's final 14-0 to Inveraray and were ousted here 12-1 by Kyles.

Roddie MacDonald got five and David Zavaroni a hat-trick for the Camanachd Cupholders.

An Ian Campbell double helped Oban Camanachd through 6-1 at Glenorchy while Ryan Harrison and Ben Dalgety put Glasgow Mid-Argyll through, beating Bute 2-0.

A double from 48-year-old former manager Robert Geddes saw Strathglass beat Caberfeidh 2-0 at Cannich in the Baliemore Cup.

In the Marine Harvest North Division 1, Aonghas MacDonald scored the only goal of the game for Skye in Inverness.

And Craig Taylor performed a similar feat for Kilmory away to Oban Celtic in South Division 1, where a Craig MacDougall double for Lochside Rovers saw them battle back for a 2-2 at Strachur.
