Newtonmore served early notice of intent in their bid for a sixth consecutive Marine Harvest Premiership title with a 7-1 eclipse of Lochaber at Spean Bridge.

Evan Menzies led the line with a hat-trick on the day the new shinty season really got under way following mass postponements the previous Saturday. Paul MacArthur, Calum Stewart and double-scorer Glen MacKintosh also netted for More.

However, there was less good fortune for 2014 runners-up Lovat who went down 2-0 away to Kinlochshiel. Jordan Fraser opened just after the half hour and John MacRae completed the job soon after the restart.

Elsewhere in the Premiership, Kyles Athletic's Roddy MacDonald netted a double in a 3-1 away win over newly-promoted Oban Camanachd, Kingussie came from behind with goals from Barrie Dallas and Savio Geninito to win 2-1 against Fort William on while Glenurquhart beat Inveraray 2-0 at the Winterton, Fraser Heath scoring twice.

Kilmallie are the early pacemakers in the National Division which, with seven clubs, will only have a 12-game programme.

They thrashed newcomers Ballachulish 8-0, including doubles from John Stewart, Liam MacDonald and Michael Rodger while Ryan Stewart and Peter Carmichael completed the rout.

The other promoted side in action were Inverness, who stepped up from the bottom of North Division 1 to fill a gap.

The team from the Highland capital lost 2-0 at home to Glasgow Mid Argyll, Jamie MacFadyen and Euan Forsyth on target.

The other National Division game was the derby at Beauly where Marc MacLachlan, Sean Stewart and Barrie MacDonald produced a 3-0 win for the home side over Caberfeidh.
