Plymouth Devils slipped to the bottom of the Premier League after a six-point defeat against Redcar Bears.
Poole Pirates regular Ricky Kling top scored for the Devils with 13 points as he deputised for the absent Ben Barker.
An under-strength Plymouth, who were also missing heat leader Cory Gathercole fell behind after six heats and never recovered.
The defeat leaves Plymouth at the foot of the Premier League with two points from their first three league matches.
Devils gave themselves hope of a win after a maximum 5-1 in heat 13 courtesy of Kling and Ryan Fisher brought them back to within six points.
However those hopes were dashed in the very next race as the Bears duo of Max Dilger and Aaron Summers produced their own maximum heat win to guarantee the away side the points.
