Plymouth Devils defeated Newcastle 48-42 to earn their first league points of the 2014 campaign.

Ben Barker (12) top-scored for Plymouth and was well supported by Rasmus Jensen (9) and Kalle Katajisto (9+1).

The Devils started well, taking heat advantages in the first two races to open up a six-point lead but were unable to build on it.

But Newcastle drew nine of the remaining 13 heats to ensure they took a bonus point back to the north east.

Plymouth rolled off 11 of the 15 race winners on the night but struggled to gain heat advantages to see off a stubborn Newcastle side.

The Diamonds who gave a debut to Great Britain international Danny King were never more than six behind throughout the night.

Going into the final race Plymouth needed a heat advantage to secure all there league points on offer and although Barker took the chequered flag, his team-mate Jensen fell.

That meant a tied heat ensuring the Diamonds an away point while the Devils took two-points.
