Defending champion Nick Matthew was beaten 3-1 in the final of the British Grand Prix by Egypt's Mohamed Elshorbagy in Manchester.

England's Matthew, 35, lost 11-7 12-10 9-11 11-6 against the world number one, who won the British Open in May.

"The pace in the first game took me by surprise," said Matthew.

Elshorbagy, who lives in Bristol, said: "I came out fighting for each point and I'm glad it turned out to be a great match and a great battle."

He added: "I expect we are going to have a lot more battles to come this season but I know I will be coming back next year to defend my title for sure."

Last November, the 24-year-old Egyptian accused three-time world champion Matthew of being past his peak.
