Melanie Nocher set two Irish records on Thursday as she missed out on a place in the 100m backstroke final at the European Short Course Championships.

The Belfast swimmer clocked 59.37 seconds in the morning heats to better Aisling Cooney's 2009 time by .51secs.

Nocher then improved the record to 59.30 as she finished 15th overall.

Wexford teenager Grainne Murphy failed to make the finals of the 200m butterfly and 200m individual medley in the championships in Poland.

However, Murphy did improve her national record in the individual medley with a 2:12.71 clocking.

The Wexford teenager will have high hopes of earning a medal in the 800m freestyle on Friday where she goes into the event as third fastest.

Murphy won silver in the event at last year's European Long Course Championships.
