England's women and men have both missed out on promotion at the European Table Tennis Team Championships in Lisbon.

The women were edged out 3-2 by Greece in their divisional quarter-final.

But they recovered to beat Bulgaria 3-1, and then Slovenia by the same score, to finish 21st overall.

The men lost 3-1 to Belgium in their last-eight tie and were then beaten 3-1 by Slovenia. They then defeated Turkey 3-1 in their final game for 23rd place.

It meant both England teams failed to qualify for the inaugural European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan, next summer but individual places are still up for grabs.

In the women's competition, Wales finished 26th and Scotland 31st, while in the men's competition Wales and Scotland were 34th and 35th.

England squad: Liam Pitchford, Paul Drinkhall, Sam Walker, Darius Knight, Joanna Drinkhall, Kelly Sibley, Tin-Tin Ho, Hannah Hicks.
