Ward could not capitalise after a strong start

British number two James Ward suffered a galling defeat in the first round of French Open qualifying after holding a match point against Ryan Harrison.

The 24-year-old Londoner served for the match at 5-3 in the second set but could not convert his opportunity.

American 18th seed Harrison, ranked 124th, broke back and won 10 of the last 12 games in a 6-7 7-5 6-2 victory.

British number three Heather Watson will face Romania's Ioana Raluca Olaru in qualifying on Wednesday.

Watson, seeded sixth for the preliminary tournament, will be hoping to come through three rounds and so secure a place in the main draw alongside Elena Baltacha and Anne Keothavong.

Ward's defeat ensures that world number four Andy Murray will be the only British man in the singles event at Roland Garros.
